POSITION PURPOSE:
Provides leadership and support at the district for the K-12 Science curriculum in the areas of curriculum development, professional development, and identification of best practices. Evaluates the effectiveness of K-12 Science programs and develops strategies for improvement. Ensures that instruction is aligned with curriculum goals.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, scanners, and copiers. The position, at times, must be able to come into direct contact with school system staff, students, parents, staff members of external funding agencies, vendors, and the community. Work is considered light physical work, requiring the exertion of up to ten pounds of force. The work frequently requires driving automotive equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs)
- Extensive knowledge of state and federal regulations and school laws and policies related to K-12 education;
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of current principles, practices, trends, and issues in Science pedagogy;
- Comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel; Google Apps;
- Demonstrated leadership and team building skills;
- Ability to analyze data to support instruction;
- Ability to meet deadlines;
- Ability to assess program needs and plan short and long-range programs for Science at the K-12 levels;
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, all school-based workers, external agencies, students, parents, and the community.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in Science or Science Education;
- Five years of successful science teaching experience;
- Experience in planning and delivering professional development to adult learners.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
- Hold or be eligible for a North Carolina Professional Educator's License in Science;
- Hold or be eligible for a North Carolina Professional Educator's License for School Administrator-Principal or Curriculum Instructional Specialist;
- Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license according to the State of NC requirements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree in Educational Administration, Curriculum and Instruction, or related field;
- Knowledge of North Carolina Science Standards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plans, organizes, conducts, and evaluates curriculum development and revision as it relates to K-12 Science.
- Plans, organizes, and implements professional development activities in relation to the K-12 Science curriculum.
- Provides direction designed to promote continued growth and increased effectiveness among school personnel while adhering to local, state, and federal school laws, policies, and regulations.
- Develops long and short-range goals and objectives for the improvement to science instruction and evaluates program goals to determine effectiveness.
- Reviews educational research related to improving student achievement and promotes instructional reform toward best practices for science.
- Collaborates with school personnel, interdepartmental representatives, and community groups regarding program initiatives, implementation, and evaluation.
- Evaluates and participates in the selection of instructional resources and materials for K-12 science.
- Attends workshops, training sessions, and conferences in an effort to stay abreast of curriculum and instructional changes relating to K-12 Science curriculum; shares information with school system staff and the community regarding K-12 Science.
- Performs other related duties, as assigned.
