Monday-Friday (Occasional evenings and weekends) Position is eligible for a hybrid telework workweek

POSITION PURPOSE:

Provides full, clear, and accurate oral communication between school system staff and individuals (primarily parents and guardians of students) by interpreting from English to the target language and vice versa, both virtually and in person.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs)
  • Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel; Google Apps;
  • Considerable knowledge of school services, cultures, and customs of countries where the target language is spoken;
  • Considerable knowledge of K-12 public education process in the United States;
  • Considerable knowledge and high degree of proficiency in oral and written English and another language;
  • Effective time management skills;
  • Ability to handle information in an appropriate and confidential manner;
  • Ability to deliver interpretations from English to the target language and vice versa;
  • Ability to work independently without close supervision;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, students, parents, external agencies, and the community.


EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
  • Two years of coursework from a regionally accredited college or university;
  • Two years of experience working as an interpreter;
  • Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.


CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
  • Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license according to the State of NC requirements.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience working in a school environment.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Provides full, clear, and accurate oral communication between school system staff and individuals (primarily parents and guardians of students) by interpreting from English to the target language and vice versa, both virtually and in person.
  2. Prepares monthly reports of interpretation services rendered.
  3. Communicates availability and conflicts with scheduling assignments/projects in a timely manner.
  4. Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information.
  5. Performs other related duties, as assigned.


WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, copiers, and scanners. The position, at times, must be able to come into direct contact with school system staff, staff members of external funding agencies, and the community. Work is considered light physical work, requiring the exertion of up to ten pounds of force. The work frequently requires driving automotive equipment.
